Patrick was drooling, which wasn't exactly uncommon, SpongeBob had to admit, for his best friend. What was uncommon, however, was the hearts in his eyes and the way his feet weren't even really touching the sand. He stared at Patrick for a long moment before it finally dawned on him when he'd last seen that expression Patrick's jovial, pink face: way back when they had first met Sandy, SpongeBob's girlfriend, way back, SpongeBob realized, when they had been fighting over Sandy's friendship. At least, they had told themselves at the time that it was friendship, but it had actually been way more.

Besides that, Sandy was his now, and had been for some time. SpongeBob rolled up the loose, yellow sponge on his arms and began to ball up his fists. He wasn't giving Sandy up without a fight! Yet Patrick wasn't even looking at him, or at Sandy, he realized suddenly! He wasn't about to fight. He couldn't fight, and besides, he couldn't fight his best friend, not again, not over a girl! Sandy had promised she'd be his best girl forever.

"SpongeBob," Sandy quipped, her big, bushy tail whisking, "sometimes you're as dumb as a box of rocks!" Yet she hopped over to him and placed a warm, sweet kiss on his spongy cheek. "Just look at 'em!" she said. "This is going to be the best time Mindy's ever had this Summer, staying with me!"

With Sandy's arm wrapping around him, SpongeBob took another look at his best friend and at where he was really looking -- or, rather, who, Sandy's visiting cousin, Mindy. Mindy was trembling in one spot. He'd seen that look before, that same level of energy was something he and Patrick often had when they'd had what Squidworth considered to be too much sugar, yet Mindy was jumping up and down in one place. She was moving so swiftly that SpongeBob couldn't even see her feet leaving the sand, yet she hovered in one place.

Sandy cupped a hand around her mouth and whispered to SpongeBob, "I've never seen Mindy so still!"

"What did you say she is again?" he asked and then colored as he realized how rude he was being to his girlfriend's favorite cousin.

"Why, she's a sugar glider! Fastest, most energetic, and sweetest one in all of Texas! And your best friend is clearly crushing on my cousin!" She grinned wide. The ocean light gleamed on her buck teeth, and SpongeBob swooned. He clutched his hands together, but she was still there, her arm wrapped around him. She was still there, still beside him, still choosing him. And Patrick was still staring at Mindy, clearly swooning as he was (at least that's what Sandy called it), and best of all, Mindy was swooning right back!

"You know what this means, right?" SpongeBob asked, leaning closer to Sandy.

"It's gonna be a great Summer vacation!" Sandy whistled jovially between her teeth.

"Even better!" SpongeBob looked to his girl, his eyes huge. "Double weddings!" He and Patrick could swoon together with Sandy and Mindy forever! He never had to worry about leaving Patrick alone in favor of Sandy again! They had their happily ever afters right here with these two wonderful girls!

"Oh, SpongeBob, you're so sweetly naiive -- "

"You'll marry me, won't you, Sandy?" he asked, leaning still closer to her. He floated up in the current. Weight could not hold him when he was this happy, and with Sandy, he was always happy.

"'Course I will, SpongeBob! But I can't speak for Mindy!"

"They'll be happy too!" SpongeBob declared, completely certain.

Sandy stepped back, her hands going to her hips. "Now, SpongeBob, we can't go around declaring what's going to make other people happy!"

"Why not?" SpongeBob questioned. "I know my friend! I know Patrick better than anybody else does, even Patrick! Just like he knows me better than anybody else does! Isn't that right, buddy?" he asked, looking over to Patrick.

"Duh..." Patrick continued to drool as he stared at Mindy.

"SpongeBob, you can't predict the future, and you can't go swimming around telling other people they need to get married! Those two haven't even said one word to each other yet! And Mindy has all the boys back in Australia wanting her! See, she's originally from Australia, and she was glad to get away from all those Aussies! She says the Texan boys are almost as bad, but I can whup 'em! I whup 'em quite regularly, as a matter of fact, any time they look at her when she ain't wanting to be looked at! I don't wanna have to whup Patrick too!"

"I don't think you're going to have to," SpongeBob cut in to his girlfriend's tirade. He knew she meant well, but he knew when he saw love at first sight. "I think she's going to want Patrick to look at her!"

"They ain't even spoke one word yet!" Sandy whistled again.

"Swim?" Mindy's voice was high-pitched, squeaky, and energetic. It hit such a note that SpongeBob had to clean out his ears, but just as he was removing the last of a long pile-up of wax, he heard Patrick grunt out a reply.

"Duh! Yeah!"

He turned and watched as Mindy offered Patrick her paw and the two swam off together. Within moments, they were even swimming circles in the shape of hearts.

"See there?" SpongeBob demanded, turning back to Sandy and waving a flapping, loose, and yellow arm back at their best friends, other than each other of course.

"I -- It's just a first swim!"

"The first swim of many," SpongeBob declared, folding his arms decisively across his square chest, "in the current of Love!"

"You know what, SpongeBob?" Sandy suddenly questioned.

SpongeBob grimaced and started to pedal backwards in the water, just far enough so that Sandy couldn't reach him to slap him like she sometimes did when truly annoyed, but she closed the distance between them in one great push of her hind legs. She stopped him swimming away with one hand on his cheek. His head turned. Their eyes met, and suddenly, he felt almost as speechless as he had the very first time he had visited Sandy. There was something about a girl, he knew, that just made a boy take complete leave of his senses, but he didn't care anymore if he was senseless, especially since Patrick was equally speechless and equally happy. His best friend would be fine now if he settled down with Sandy.

"Sometimes," Sandy said, swimming closer too, "you're really, really sweet." She kissed him, and SpongeBob started making heart circles in the water all by himself.

Okay, this is just adorable.

I had to look up what a sugar glider is ( apparently a sort of possum). Haven’t watched more than a few minutes of SpongeBob in years, but I can hear their voices.

Swim?" Mindy's voice was high-pitched, squeaky, and energetic. It hit such a note that SpongeBob had to clean out his ears, but just as he was removing the last of a long pile-up of wax, he heard Patrick grunt out a reply.

"Duh! Yeah!"
