REVIEW: Extraordinary X-Men #4 (2024)

SPOILERS!
Very happy to see Bobby trying to come through for Kitty. I'm not entirely sure he's the best person for the job, however, especially not with their history, which honestly never made much sense to begin with unless Kitty just likes the April/December romances -- although, granted, we know she does with her men (Piotr being with her when she was only fourteen, then Wisdom in later years). I was never really sold on the Bobby/Kitty romance though, and honestly felt that it was just another pathetic nod at the movies. (On a side note, I'm actually excited, after having seen Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters with the husband -- our first theater movie alone, despite the fact that we've been together for SIX years now! -- to give the next Marvel mutants movie a try. Hopefully Disney will handle it all WAY better than Fox ever did!)
On the one hand, Bobby does have a history for going after the ladies when they're hurting and on the run, ala Rogue, which also makes sense why she should choose to send him after Kitty. On the other hand, again, they're history was never that great, and although Rogue does understand what it's like to be running from being an X-Man and all that can entail, she and Kitty were never that close. Logan likely respects his girl too much to interfere when he knows she needs some away time, but she was always WAY closer to Ororo than Rogue. Plus, again, I'm taking back to WHY have they FINALLY taken Kitty out of the closet, and Rachel too, and now seem to REFUSE to give her any page time with Ray, or even Illyana for that matter?! I would have SO preferred to see EITHER of them or Ororo!
Of COURSE, her hackles are going to get up about Bobby! I've never understood the "Oh, I want to date you" and then suddenly "I just figured out I'm gay", ala Dawson's Creek! (That was ONE of only two times I ever felt bad for Joey!) Honestly, when she had the knife to his heart, I half expected us to learn that it was Mystique instead! And I'm quite certain she was kinda expecting the same! But again, coming from someone who is bisexual myself, I have NEVER been able to understand how someone just "discovers" they're gay. If you are truly of another sexual orientation, those thoughts are there for a LONG time. They don't just suddenly spring up over night! WHY hurt whoever you're dating by suddenly announcing that, even though you wanted to date them at first and even pursued them, you can't be with them anymore because you're gay?! I know hurt people hurt people, but this is one of those tropes that just bothers me, and it's not only because of the Brazilian.
But then I am EQUALLY as bothered by the fact that one of the FOUNDING members of the X-Men would want to date a girl who was FOURTEEN when she joined the team! WHAT THE EFF, MARVEL?!?!
On the other hand, I'm definitely liking Bronze and the set of characters around her, both her crush and the teacher figure (LOVE that he's a kindly, old man, especially in today's society where we seem to be disrespecting men almost as much as women were once disrespected). I'll never understand why people always want to seem to rip others down to build themselves up, and I'm very glad Bronze has not one but TWO humans who are so quick to support her and help her keep her secret! Finally, SOMETHING good seems to be coming from wokeism in comics!!
I definitely LIKE Emma's outfit as well. It's one of her better costumes over the last while, even if the final panel makes it look cheap, something Emma would NEVER wear (or be)!
I don't know why a certain letter writer wants to assume that Kitty's roommate is her current love interest, but I do appreciate what looked to be the roomie trying to set her up with someone as well as the nod to Kitty's Jewish culture. As for the end, I still hope to read more one day (preferably soon) of just what Kitty did end up doing as Shadowkat, but I'm more of a Logan type personality myself when it comes to protecting my folks, so I can't see killing humans as that much of a bad, or even big, thing. They have been at WAR for far too long now with humans, even if it's not been officially announced, and you either die or are killed in war. Or worse, let your loved ones be killed. Kitty did what she had to do to protect her loved ones, and that's more than all right by me! That's what I EXPECT of my heroes (as opposed to Batman, always letting them escape again to kill more)! In light of that, as far as I'm concerned, Axo can bloody well keep walking!
The series has definitely picked up, but I'm still not sure if this is going to be a long-term win for me or not. Nonetheless, I definitely have higher hopes now in looking toward the next issue! And if it's a win, I MIGHT just do a collection for these reviews as I've done for the new, and MARVELOUS!, Uncanny X-Men run.
Then again, it does have my two all-time favorite X-Women starring in it so... here ;)
And that reminds me: Bronze, with her normal teenage woes and her interest in the theater, definitely seems to me, so far, to be the most like young!Kitty! :)
